Pizza 1

Mmmmmm

  • Whole wheat crust (I’m trying the Whole Foods frozen ones – just have to thaw it out)
  • Spinach
  • 1 tomato, sliced thin
  • 1/2 zucchini, sliced thin
  • 1/4 onion, chopped
  • ~ 4 oz. Mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 green pepper, chopped
  • Pepperoni, sliced thin
  • Tomato sauce

Clearly there is a lot of chopping and slicing to be done, so that works well with the thaw time on the crust.

If you make your own crust, you’ll have to start with enough time to let the dough rise. When the crust is ready, slightly pre- cook it for about 5 minutes, but only if it’s from scratch. I do this because I always have lots of ingredients that might make it soggy otherwise.

Start preheating the oven. Usually you want to be at about 400° for pizza.

Spread a thin layer of tomato sauce on the crust. Add spinach as desired.

Start with spinach

Then add your onion, green pepper, zucchini, and tomato.

If the pepperoni is near the top, it has a chance of getting just a little crisp on the edges.

Add the cheese, and if desired, some Italian spices.

If you want to go vegetarian, just leave off the pepperoni.

Bake the pizza until everything looks melty and delicious.

Enjoy!

Is Art a Waste of Time?

Is it art? It makes me smile.

The topic came up during a discussion of venture capitalists and the kind of things they were investing in.

Looking into the list of projects funded by one firm, it appeared that there hadn’t been any activity for about three years and quite frankly, we couldn’t see how some of the funded projects had any potential for income. They were, essentially, art projects.

In my mind, if you are investing, you are not just giving away money.

But is giving money to art projects valuable in other ways? Is art just a waste of time?

I spend a lot of my time on arty things. I make things, I arrange my old MetroMint bottles into a rainbow of delight – clearly I value art.

I think it makes life better.

But some people are convinced it is a waste of time because it isn’t useful.

If I think about it, that might just be rooted in how one defines art.

I consider art to be just about anything that one approaches with intent rather than brute force, where thought makes the outcome something more elegant than it would have been.

Elegant doesn’t have to be pretty. Art can reveal ugly things. It can also be hidden from sight: a better way of coding a solution in software.

Is art a waste of time? No. It is a way of spending time more mindfully.

Memory Stomp

The residents of Struct B needed to have a picture taken for the magazine.

You sent someone to take the photo and submit it to the editor.

A short time later, the magazine complained that the picture had only six people in it, but they had a list of seven names.

You sent the photographer back to try again. The magazine complained again. “It’s as if Mr. N doesn’t exist. He’s just not there.” The photographer swore up and down that all of the residents were present for the photo.

You decided to see for yourself what was going on.

The struct had a nice foyer that was the perfect place for a photo, you were told. The residents gathered just as they had before, in a row spanning the foyer area.

Just as you pressed the button to take the photo, Ms. L moved directly in front of Mr. N. The resulting image had no trace of Mr. N.

“Let’s try that again,” you said, and the residents rearranged themselves as before. Again, just as you pushed the button, Ms. L was in front.

“What’s going on here?” you asked. Ms. L explained that when the picture was being taken, she suddenly felt like she didn’t have enough room – she needed to move to a position where she would have enough space.

The foyer was not quite wide enough for all of them to stand straight across, and in preparing for the photo, Ms. L would be turned sideways a bit. This felt wrong to her quite suddenly when the actual photo was being taken.

It was like she was erasing the memory of Mr. N, who stayed in place, but could no longer be seen.

You knew what the answer was. You found a nice spot in the much larger living room where everyone felt like there was plenty of space.

This time, the photo showed every resident of Struct B.

If variables don’t have enough memory allocated, they can potentially write over the memory allocated to other variables.

I Ham Such a Geek

My birthday isn’t for a couple of weeks, but I got a present the other day.

It’s a transceiver. I know, what a cool gift, right?

You have no idea.

Yes, I studied and got my Amateur Radio call sign years ago, but I never got around to getting myself a radio.

Now I have one. Hee hee.

I tuned in to the local amateur radio net last night and listened to the ham radio news and the questions and comments of people who were all connecting via radio waves.

It totally makes me smile.

Because I am such a geek.

Favorite: BBC Radio

Sometimes you just want to listen to a good story. This is one of my favorite places to go when I’m not going anywhere.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio

My favorite is Radio 4.

Once you have the player app installed, you can listen to things like 15 Minute Drama or Book at Bedtime. I do tend to stay in the Drama category, but they have humor, documentaries, news, and more.

Grilled Cheese

  • Whole wheat bread
  • Butter
  • 2 slices American cheese or any kind of cheese you have on hand
  • Ham steak (optional)

I know, I know. Too simple. But still a favorite. Here’s how I make it.

Warm up your pan on low heat.

If your bread is refrigerated, as mine always is, give each slice a little pre-warmup by putting the inside part of the slice (the part that will have the cheese on it) on the warm pan for about 30 seconds or so.

Is your cheese ready? Unwrap it, slice it, shred it or whatever you need to do. You want to get it on the bread as soon as possible so you can maximize melting time. For prepared slices, I tear them into smaller pieces because one slice can’t cover the bread.

Now butter the outside part of the slices of bread. Put one slice in the pan, butter side down. Put the cheese on top. Get that second slice on there to hold in the heat.

If you have a ham steak, you can cut it into thin slices and heat them up next to the bread.

Be patient. Keep the heat fairly low. This way you get a nice golden crisp toasty sandwich with good melted cheese inside.

When your ham is hot, put it on top of the cheese.

When the cheese has started melting, carefully flip your sandwich over. The second buttery side starts to sizzle.

Keep an eye on the bread so it doesn’t burn. Flip it a couple of times until it is perfect.

Enjoy!

The student who encouraged me

When I went back to college at 30, the first semester was pretty lonely. I’d moved to a town where I knew only one person: a computer science professor who had spent maybe half an hour with me talking about going to school there.

It was lonely outside of school, but in the computer labs, I felt like I was with my people. After years of not hearing anybody else talk about code, it was like music to my ears. It made me happy.

A short time into the semester, I had apparently developed a habit of saying the answers to questions in class mostly to myself. I wouldn’t raise my hand, or shout out the answer like the others. I would say it just loud enough for the guy in front of me to hear it.

One day, he turned around after I did this yet again, and he said, “Speak up!”. He told me I should be letting the class see how much I knew.

I only needed a little encouragement.

I tried harder after that to speak louder and participate more fully. My confidence grew. I was a dedicated student and had a natural talent for programming.

Over time I became good friends with this fellow student who had encouraged me and we worked on a robot project together.

By the time I got my degree, it wasn’t a lonely place anymore, thanks to the great people I went to school with.
